what is yoga anyway?
Simple. Yoga is one of the world’s oldest wisdom traditions and a way to bring self-awareness to your mind, body, and spirit. It is intended to awaken your life force. Yoga is not a religion. By moving your body and being fully present, here are just a few of the benefits of yoga:
- Stretched and toned muscles
- Release of tension and stress
- Calm restless thoughts
- Cultivate concentration and confidence
- Encourage self-acceptance
- Honor inner wisdom
- Invite deep peace
what will class be like?
No matter what shape you’re in, you can enjoy the balance, peace and self-awareness that yoga brings. All teachers at Mindful Elephant are certified and experienced in a variety of yoga styles and teaching methods, and they will always appreciate and respect your unique needs. We practice and encourage an environment free of judgment.
do I have to stand on my head and breathe like a lion?
It is always your practice and it doesn’t matter what anyone else is doing. Many yogis practice for years and years and a head or hand stand is not part of their practice. Everything is always optional, including breathing techniques and chanting OM. You should always honor your body and do what feels right for you. And whatever that is will always be respected in class.
what if I have an injury or something else going on in my body?
First step is to always ask your doctor if physical activity is okay. If doctor gives you the okay, you can share your concerns with the teacher when you arrive for class. Just remember yoga teachers are not doctors, so you have to listen to your body and do what is right for you. Strain and sharp pain are never part of yoga.
how do I get started?
You can purchase the $25 New to Studio Special (5 classes in 25 days) online to use for any of the group classes, and then you’re off to being the best version of you in mind, body & spirit! You can also check the schedule for the next Foundations of Yoga series and join us for this workshop to get you started in the practice of yoga, or to take you back to the basics if you've practiced previously.
For any class, let the teacher know you are new to yoga and don’t be surprised if they get really excited there is a new yogi in the world!
when can I arrive and how old do I have to be?
We know, we can’t wait either! The studio doors will open 15 - 20 minutes before each class starts. Best arrival time is 10-15 minutes before class so you can settle in and get ready for your practice.
Regular group classes are designed for adults age 18 and over. 13 - 17 year olds are welcome to attend with a parent/guardian.
what do I do when I walk in the door?
Smile! Once you enter you will sign-in at the desk with the friendly face there to greet you. Let us know you’re new to the studio and we’ll give you all the details and answer any questions to make sure you have what you need.
The studio is shoe and cell phone free, so place your shoes and belongings in a cubby before entering the studio room. Socks are okay in the studio.
Peace is beautiful and we respect it. We ask you do the same and turn off your cell phone.
can I walk in singing a song?
We are happy you’ve arrived and wish we could express our delight by singing along with you. However, many yogis arrive and begin their practice before class starts, so please maintain low voice volumes and quietly enter the studio room. Remember your mat is your sacred space. Be mindful, it’s part of the practice.
